Poseiden's Trident

A handheld trident that can fire mist from the tip

Summary

This costume is the second I built for my brother for our yearly tradition. Using a backpack-mounted, battery-powered air compressor, solenoid valve, and water tank, it can fire a light mist from the end of a modified trident prop. Since the mist is mostly air, the relatively small tank of water lasts several hours.

The backpack houses a modified Sodastream bottle, which acts as the tank. This costume was built on top of the Wolverine's Claws costume I built the year before, which already included the air compressor, air tank, battery, and solenoid valve. When the wearer presses a switch, a solenoid valve forces air pressure into the top inlet of the tank, which forces water out the bottom.

Before the water can reach the end of the trident, which was modified with a small hole in the end, it is mixed with air via a Y splitter. There's a hand-adjustable flowrate valve on both the liquid and air sides of this Y splitter, which allows the "consistency" of the mist to be tuned.

Like in the Wolverine costume, the compressor was powered by a LiFePo4 battery and triggered by a pressure sensor. The tank is used to store pressure for long-duration spraying, and the system pressure is tunable with a regulator.

The full costume was a weekend build and a great iteration from the Wolverine Claws costume. While the final product wasn't as polished as many of my other projects, it ended up being a ton of fun.
